Nonsense. I've been greatly depressed since the 2000 election. I can count
way more than twice that it has happened...

If it helps I've been depressed ever since the the 1979 UK general election.
I'd like something other than conservative government now.

You're welcome to it. Now can we have an English Parliament, please?

Not as sorry as many of us who had to live through the 80s. Though you've
had Reagan and Dubya so we really can't complain.
However the Sex Pistols were old hat by the time of the 1979 election. By
then it was bands like The Slits, the various offshoots of Big in Japan,
and the first glimmerings of the Postcard scene in Scotland. At least
that's how I remember it.

You can tell how old hat the Pistols were by then - John Lydon married the
mother of the lead singer of the Slits.
The Slits really did produce some incredible tracks. Typical Girls,
Shoplifting and Newtown are amazing and their cover of Heard It Through The
Grapevine is probably my favourite. (So good, in fact, that Kaiser Chiefs
basically copied it when they covered Grapevine.)

I didn't hear about the Pistols till around '78. I was 17 in Alabama
running around telling everybody, "you've got to hear this!" Unfortunately
most people just put on their leisure suits and ran away. To the disco. I
was a good year or two behind the rest of the civilized world, because it
was very hard to buy good music here. We (I had two friends with good taste)
ordered records out of Atlanta via snail mail. Seriously. I (vaguely)
remember almost being clobbered by a disco dj because I gave him God Save
the Queen to play, and he'd never heard it. Ooh he was mad at me. :) By '79
I was still listening to stuff you guys were already tired of hearing. :)

Quite right too. Punk was just being-angry-to-music. Disco was - and still
is - is clearly the highest form of art.

Yes. You'd have to go way back to the Warehouse and Frankie Knuckles to
really start talking about origins of course, but it's also pretty clear
in much of the more popular stuff from the 90s and frequently in vocal
house and deep house (deep house being pretty much "house at its most
houselike").

There is no magic bullet. There are, however, plenty of bullets that

Really? I didn't think they sounded much the same at all. Though I
must admit to not owning many disco tracks

Did you see "Detroit Rock City"? (Did anyone?) There's a sequence with
a group of disco fans running into the Kiss fans. (It doesn't end well
for the disco fans) One of the disco girls ends up with the Kiss fans
and argues the merits of disco. The Kiss fans dismiss her arguments
that Kiss could do a disco number and make it work. (In the chronology
of the movie, "I Was Made For Loving You" would come out in the next
year!)
